Before the session started, you are asked to put your clothes in a locker room and wash the arm where the arteriovenous fistula is located.
On arrival in the dialysis room, a nurse will designate your dialysis station after weighing you. The weight before dialysis and after dialysis is important. The doctor should establish your benchmark dry weight. This is the weight you should be at after each workout.
Before dialysis
A nurse takes your blood pressure and then programs the generator according to medical prescriptions (time and weight loss).
Your fistula is disinfected, then the nurse has a sterile drape under your arms to perform the punctures or, if necessary, you connect to the catheter. The needle or catheter is connected to a so-called "arterial" line installed on the generator. A pump is activated to draw your blood. Once the entire line is filled with blood, a second so-called "venous" line is connected to the other needle or to the other branch of the catheter. The aspirated blood is therefore immediately returned.
During dialysis
Your blood pressure is taken regularly, and the parameters recorded on the generator to ensure that the dialysis session goes smoothly.
Small discomforts can occur: nausea, dizziness, feelings of heat, headaches ... Report them all to your nurse who will intervene as quickly as possible.
Breakfast will be served during the morning session and a meal at the midday session, and a snack during the afternoon session.
At the end of the session
The nurse gives you all of your blood, checks your blood pressure again, and takes out the needles. A caregiver, during the first dialysis sessions, helps you understand the puncture points. Once the bandages are on, you are invited to rest. The dressings should be removed the next morning.
